Traditionally, a cyborg is a hybrid organism consisting of biological and artificial/ mechanical parts. Until recently with modern genetic alteration methods and technology, a proposal of broadening the definition of "cyborg" has arisen to incorporate "Biological Cyborgs" as depicted by shapers in the novel Schismatrix. Often times these science fiction icons portray a humanoid robot figure with their human-like tendencies. Some popular science fiction works consisting of cyborgs include the Björk’s “All is Full of Love” music video”, the novel “He, She, It,” and the novel “Schismatrix”. In modern times, there is a specific individual that has gained popularity with his claims of being the first true cyborg due to his cybernetic eye apparatus known as an “eyeborg.” Neil Harbisson, born with achromatopsia (can only see in black and white), is able to hear his surrounding in color with an electrical implant to his brain connected to a camera in front of his eyes that picks up the colors directly in front of him, and converts them in real-time into sound waves. With the notion of cyborgs, the fine line between being a human and being a machine is blurred.

Cyborgs in Björk’s Music Video


Bjork is an Icelandic music-song writer greatly credited for her electrical music style. Björk’s few famous singles include “It’s Oh So Quiet,” “Army of Me,” and specifically MTV award winning Music video of “All is Full Love.” For in this four-minute video, [1] is an android. She is being put together on an assembly line. In place of skin, a smooth white fiberglass shell fits over her frame. This shell is composed of many separate plates, some of which haven’t been attached yet. In [2]s neck, in her arms, and on the side of her head, there are tangles of underlying circuitry, plastic tubes, wires, and knots of metal and black vinyl. The video is mostly a study in different shades of white with everything streamlined, minimal, sleek, and elegant. This highly stylized look recalls the tainted modernist design of certain science fiction films. Traditionally machine lack uniform motions; they perform more rigidly than living beings, less open to change. But “All Is Full of Love” systematically reverses this mythology. It suggests that robots and cyborgs might well be more sensitive than humans. Cyborgs might have more intense perceptions than humans do, they might respond more delicately to subtler gradations of change. This is the utopian prospect of the cyborg, the boundary-crossing fusion of human and machine famously described by Donna Haraway; she says that cyborgs cut across all three of the “leaky distinctions” whose permeability is a feature of postmodern existence.; These distinctions are as follows: 1) Between human and animal. 2) Between human/animal (organism) and machine. 3) Between physical and non-physical. In fact, Björk has explored some of these boundary crossings in other videos aswell: particularly the metamorphoses and boundary crossings between human and animal. However, “All Is Full of Love,” of course, particularly concentrates on the second and the third of these leaky distinctions. All in all, it marks Bjork's most radical crossing- over, justifying Haraway’s exuberant claim that “cyborgs are ether, quintessence.”

Remix Visual

"All is full of Love," along with being a track on the album 'Homogenic' of [3] finest work in the late 1990's, is also the fifth and last single from that album. This particular single reached 23rd peak position in the UK Single's chart, and 8th in U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales. One trivia worthy fact is that the original song never appeared on the album, it was only used in the music video; the remix on the album was Howie B's. In the link to the visual artifact from the header title (and here -- the original video was remixed by Mayank Tahilramani and audio taken from a Youtube remix. The edits were done to reflect the audio remix's up-beat tempo by flickering between mechanical work begin done on the robots and the robot's human like expression during the vocals. Alterations had to be made to maintain lip synchronization so the humanistic appeal of the cyborg performance. This remix tried to further express the humanistic traits of the cyborg by emphasizing clips of the music video which reveals the face and facial expression. All video edits were done on Apple’s Final Cut Pro.
